Mitosis Cell Economy: How Splitting, Selling and Upgrading Connect

Mitosis's cell economy explained: SPLIT grows your cells, SELL pays out Cash, and Cash buys upgrades that make the next splits stronger — plus Gold Rush sale timing.

Mitosis's Cash economy is one repeating loop: SPLIT multiplies your cells, SELL turns the pile into Cash, and Cash buys the upgrade panels on the right of the lab screen that make the next round of splits stronger. Around that loop sit two more progression systems — rebirths earn Tokens that unlock a skill tree, and 28 mutations can be found and fused into mixes.

The loop in four moves

With the cell-splitting screen open and AUTO off:

  1. Click SPLIT at the bottom center to grow your cell count — the × number above it is your current total; ×2 means two cells.
  2. Wait for the cooldown countdown and progress bar to finish, then split again to keep growing the batch.
  3. Click SELL, beside SPLIT, when you want the accumulated cells turned into Cash.
  4. Every sale leaves one cell behind so production can continue — that surviving cell starts your next batch.

The full first-session walkthrough lives in the Mitosis beginner guide.

Where the Cash goes: upgrades

Each sale feeds the upgrade panels along the right side of the screen. A panel lists its current effect, next effect and Cash price; once you have enough Cash, clicking the panel buys it.

Three named upgrades each work a different part of the loop — choose by what you want to improve:

  • Ball Value raises the sale value per cell. Pick it when the cells you already produce should be worth more.
  • Split Speed shortens the split cooldown. Pick it when waiting between splits is what slows you down.
  • Capacity raises how many cells you can hold. Pick it when you keep reaching your population limit and want room for a larger batch.

Keep splitting and selling to fund further purchases; per-level values, prices and a fuller comparison are on the Mitosis upgrades page.

Timing the sale

Two timed events multiply what a sale pays:

EventEffect while active
Gold Rush2× sale multiplier
Rainbow1.5× sale multiplier

The boost lasts only as long as the event's countdown, so the profitable pattern is to build the batch first and complete the SELL inside the window — Gold Rush gives the larger individual sale bonus. The other weather events and their timings are on the Mitosis events page.

Don't confuse the sale boosters with the mutation boosters: Eclipse multiplies mutation odds (1.5× generally, 6× for rare ones) and Lava Rain gives a 1.75× mutation multiplier. Neither raises Cash, so those windows favor splitting toward discoveries, not rushing a sale.

One limit survives any boost: a sale boost does not lift Boss restrictions. If only half your balls pay during a Boss goal, Rainbow's multiplier does not remove that restriction.

Keep Rotten cells out of the batch

A ball flagged with the Rotten warning sells for $0. Hover over it to read the Rotten tooltip, click the ball before your next SPLIT, and watch for CURED! to confirm the treatment worked. Cure first, split second — otherwise that $0 ball rides along in the batch for nothing.

Reading the loop during challenges

Challenge goals show the loop's progress in the bar just above SPLIT and SELL:

  • GOAL 1 OF 3, 2 OF 3 or 3 OF 3 — your stage in the goal set.
  • The cash fraction — earnings credited toward the goal versus the amount required to clear it.
  • TRIES — how many SELL attempts remain. Each sale spends one try, so splitting first lets you build the batch before committing an attempt.
  • On the third goal, the BOSS line names the active restriction.

Clearing a goal brings up CASH OUT with the settlement amount — read it separately from the target, because the two can differ. In one observed longer-split Boss clear, a $245K target showed $207K CASH OUT; the target is the requirement to meet, not a promised payout. Rewards also vary: one $270 goal cleared by a $349 sale awarded 6 Tokens and an Overgrowth card — rewards for that clear, not a fixed payout for every goal. In general, challenge rewards can include cash, Tokens and cards. Goal sets and restrictions are detailed on the Mitosis challenges and Mitosis bosses pages.

Where the loop leads

The split–sell–upgrade cycle is the core of Mitosis's progression, and two more systems sit alongside it:

On top of the loop itself, working codes can hand out free Cash and spins while you play — current strings live on the Mitosis codes page.
