Mitosis Beginner Guide: Your First Session, Step by Step
Your first Mitosis session explained: split cells in the lab, sell your first batch for Cash, buy the right first upgrade, and pick your next goal.
Your first Mitosis session comes down to one loop: click SPLIT in the lab to multiply your cells, wait out the short cooldown, hit SELL to turn the batch into Cash, then spend that Cash on an upgrade that makes the next batch better. Here is exactly how that first loop works, what the buttons and locks mean, and where to aim afterward.

Start in the lab
A new account begins on the cell-splitting screen. The controls sit at the bottom of the lab: SPLIT in the bottom center grows your cell population, and SELL beside it turns the cells you have accumulated into Cash. The upgrade panels on the right take that Cash and improve your next batch.
Split, wait, sell: your first batch
With the splitting screen open and AUTO off:
- Click SPLIT at the bottom center to increase your cell population.
- Read the × number above SPLIT to check how many cells you have — ×2 means two cells.
- Wait for the countdown and progress bar to finish, then click SPLIT again to grow the batch.
- Click SELL beside SPLIT when you are ready to turn your accumulated cells into Cash.
- Use the one cell left after the sale to begin the next batch.
That is the whole core loop. Everything else in the game builds on repeating it with better upgrades.
What the locks mean
- A lock on SPLIT means its cooldown is running. Watch the countdown above the button; you can split again when it finishes. Repeated clicks will not skip the wait.
- SELL can briefly lock while a sale settles. Let the payout finish and the button become available again.
- A lock icon by itself does not mean you must fill your entire capacity before selling.
Buy your first upgrade
Each panel on the right shows its current effect, next effect and cash price. Read those, and once you have enough Cash, click the panel to buy. Your first purchase depends on what you want to improve:
| Upgrade | What it does | Pick it when |
|---|---|---|
| Ball Value | Raises the sale value per cell | You want the cells you already produce to be worth more |
| Split Speed | Shortens the split cooldown | Waiting between splits is slowing you down |
| Capacity | Raises how many cells you can hold | You keep reaching your population limit and want room for a larger batch |
Keep splitting and selling to fund further purchases. For level values, prices and a fuller comparison, see our Mitosis upgrades guide.
Keep an eye on CHALLENGE
The CHALLENGE button sits at the top of the screen. While it is locked, check the progress displayed beneath it and simply continue your split-and-sell loop. Once it turns green, click it to enter. The goals, sale-attempt rules and rewards inside are covered in our Mitosis challenges and bosses guides.
Leave the lab and pick your next goal
When you want to see the rest of the game, click the Exit door icon in the lower-left corner of the splitting screen and wait for the teleport transition to finish. Your character appears on the street in front of a purple portal.
From there, two goals make sense:
- Earn more Cash. Improve your batches and make use of sale bonuses. Our cell economy guide explains boosts and when to sell.
- Collect mutations. Keep splitting for chances to discover mutations — discovery is a chance, not a guarantee — then use the mutation index in our mutations guide to identify their categories and effects.
Both feed the bigger picture: Mitosis has 28 mutations to discover and fuse into mixes, rebirths that earn Tokens and unlock a skill tree, and events such as Gold Rushes, Blood Moons and Meteor Showers — our events guide follows what is live. Working codes also hand out free extras; the codes page keeps the current list.
For now, though, the loop above is your whole job: split, wait, sell, upgrade, repeat.
